Tarot cards reveal hidden thoughts of surrealist genius Leonora Carrington

Recognition came late for the pioneering British-Mexican artist and feminist, and now the emergence of a private collection has given her work new meaning

A male figure – the Fool – floats almost in space, etched in white on to a shimmering blue background, a dog pawing at his leg. In a second painting, Death strides across a field wielding his scythe, two heads sitting on the ground.

The images, both extraordinary and vivid, are part of a set of tarot cards, painted by the British-born Mexican surrealist painter Leonora Carrington.

A look back at presenter’s career, which has taken a hit thanks to a series of damaging press stories Phillip Schofield’s biographer once described the TV presenter as the “hottest star in Britain today” with a “glorious, uplifting life story”. Asteroid City review – Wes Anderson’s 1950s sci-fi is an exhilarating triumph of pure style

This tale of earth-shattering events in a space-obsessed desert town leans nicely into its own artificiality, and every delicious, microscopic detail is a delight To say that he’s done it again – yet again – is going to mean something different to fans and non-fans. But I have to say the first category is the only place to be for what is simply a terrifically entertaining and lightly sophisticated new comedy from Wes Anderson, in his signature rectilinear, deadpan style, with primary-pastel colours and his all-star repertory ensemble cast. Regulars including Jason Schwartzman and Tilda Swinton are now joined by Scarlett Johansson and Tom Hanks, who have been welcomed into the droll Anderson fold. And the director emphatically proves that the YouTube pasticheurs are like Butlin’s Elvis impersonators: they’re not quite doing it.
